Playing Golf With Arthritis

Exercise is one of the best ways to treat osteoarthritis. It can help your mood, act as a pain reliever, increase your flexibility, help you to maintain your weight, improve your cardiovascular system, and make you generally healthier!
The symptoms of osteoarthritis normally comes on very gradually. First you notice that joints may be sore after working hard physically or exercising. Any joint may be affected by osteoarthritis, but it's most common that it occurs in the hands, hips, knees, or spine.
All of the areas that osteoarthritis usually affects are used in playing golf.
You shouldn't let it worry you though. Playing golf can also help you to increase your balance and your range of motion. Walking the golf course, will benefit your health even more! Yes, this is the reason why golf is one of the exercises that is recommended for someone with osteoarthritis!
You need to remember this. There are many special products produced just to make golf easier on your joints and body.
The Arthritis Foundation at www.arthritis.org has some tips for arthritic golfers that can help you enjoy golfing and they even suggest products that can enable you to enjoy it even more!
Wrist braces and gloves are great tools to wear when you are playing golf. It stabilizes the joints in your hands and wrists and will help your osteoarthritis. Both of these items are not very expensive.
Use great training aids like lower compression balls.
Spikeless golf shoes may be much more comfortable for you to wear.
Check with your local golf store associate or golf pro if there are any products that they recommend to make golf easier on your joints. New products are introduced all the time.
To warm up before you play golf is always very important. Your muscles has to be stretched and you should swing a few times for practice. Use your half-strength swing at first and don't try to hit the ball too hard. Everyone, not only you should warm up and start swinging slowly. Accuracy is most important, a hard swing is not necessary.
Tees will help when you play golf.
Don't forget to drink water. it is very important for any golf player while playing.
Rest a bit when you begin to feel tired. You don't have to play all 18 holes. It's most important that you enjoy the game.
Do you feel sore after you play? Here are a few tips to relieve your pain and stiffness.
- A warm shower can feel great on stiff muscles and make them soft.
- It's a good idea to gently stretch your muscles.
- If possible, apply an ice pack to any sore areas.
- Make sure sore joints are rested.
- Magnetic therapy works fine.
- Be careful with your weight. Keep it at a healthy level. Too much weight can make your hips and knees hurt.
If you are still in pain for more than 1 hour after your golf-round,consult your physician or physical therapist. Work with them to find ways to adjust your game if you notice any of the following symptoms of over exercise:
- Unexplained or chronic tiredness
- Feeling weak
- Motion range decrease
- Joint swelling
- Pain lasting for more than one hour after exercising
Proper warm ups is supposed to really help you playing golf with arthritis and it is fun too!
